Specially-cast iron used in iron furnishings, window and door grates, etc. is another key ingredient for giving a rustic appearance. Arches, fireplaces, planter boxes and other interior features are key ingredients in imparting that rustic look. Handcrafted materials can be perfect exhibitions of a rustic nature, particularly high quality rustic collections created by artisans. Handcrafted pieces each have their own unique character, which is the very essence of rustic décor.
For starters, replace the fabrics. The motifs of yesterday - big floral prints, barnyard animals, farming tools and the like - mark Country decor as kitschy. Instead, choose stripes and checks for upholstery, while keeping one or two of the traditional prints for throw pillows, small wall hangings or bench cushions. Painted furniture and antique quilts still say "country," so these furnishings can be retained if they're in good condition. Even though some Country styles call for painted furniture to appear distressed, too many nicks and dents simply make it look old and worn. Whether to repaint entirely or touch up the marks can be the decorator's choice, but don't give up the inherent charm of such pieces. Painted kitchen chairs or a painted chest with a countryside scene are perfect for this decorating style. Add two or three vintage quilts on a rack or display a collection of folded quilts in a glass-front cabinet.
